Acclaimed Brighton children’s author and secondary school teacher at Roedean, Emma Shevah, publishes her fifth novel for children.
How to Save the World with a Chicken and an Egg, published by Chicken House on 1 April 2021, is Emma Shevah’s fifth book for children.
Shevah is Thai and Irish, and was born and raised in London. She has lived and travelled in many countries but now lives in Brighton with half of her four children. She is currently Head of Year at Roedean, where she teaches English. Her first novel, Dream on Amber, was described as ‘beautifully written’ by The Independent, ‘fantastic’ by the Guardian, and ‘funny, poignant and wise’ by The Wall Street Journal. Her second novel Dara Palmer’s Major Drama was optioned by the BBC for CBBC.
Her new novel, How to Save the World with a Chicken and an Egg, is a positive-action eco story for 7 + year olds, featuring Shevah’s trademark humour, highly original storytelling and authentic characters. Inspired by her passion for educating young readers on climate change, conservation and celebrating differences, it is set in the scenic coastal town of Southwold, Suffolk and follows high-spirited Ivy, who believes she can talk to animals, and Nathaniel, an autistic boarding-school boy, who is socially awkward and obsessed with animal facts. They come together unexpectedly on an English beach one summer with the arrival of a rare and wondrous sea creature: a giant leatherback turtle who lays her eggs in front of the world’s media. Soon they’re on a mission to make a difference in the world – even if they have to do it one animal at a time …
‘Children feel powerless in the face of something huge and global like climate change. My aim is to inspire joy and show readers their role is important, too. What better way to do that than through storytelling?’ Emma Shevah
With plenty of fun facts about the natural world and top tips about how to help the environment, How to Save the World with a Chicken and an Egg is a mystery adventure that will appeal to a wide variety of eco-aware young readers this summer.
