Brighton and Hove Triathlon Organiser Offers Kids a Sporting Chance
This September will be the 4th year for the Brighton and Hove Triathlon which takes place on the picturesque Hove Lawns.
The event has grown annually since its inception in 2016 and now boasts over 1400 entries due to its beautiful iconic location, the ability to do a sea swim, traffic free roads for the bike section, and a weekend of family-focused races.
Designed to incorporate the whole family, children as young as 3 are able to compete over the weekend in the Scootathlon – scoot, bike and run thanks to Race Director John Lunt who is passionate about getting young people active and introducing them to multi-sport.
John, who was the Competition Manager for the Triathlon at London 2012 Olympic Games, came up with the idea of Scootathlon when his two boys were young and John was organising 43 events every yearas founder at Human Race.
The very first Scootathlon was in 2002 when John’s sons James (now 21) and Thomas (18) were 4 years of age.
John said, “In the early days, we had to think of something to keep the kids active whilst my wife and I were working the events. I also wanted to introduce them to multi-sport activity, some element of competition and an outlet for their energy.”
“In those days, schools were encouraging the idea that there were never any losers, but a lot of children are naturally competitive so I wanted to give them an opportunity to race. As Triathlon includes a sea or open water swim, we couldn’t put 3 or 4 year olds in a lake so the swim element was always going to be an issue for small children. However, because of the wide range of abilities in children we had to think of an alternative. My thought process was that most kids can run, will have a bike in their shed and many have a scooter too, so I came up with the idea of Scootathlon.
“Last year we had140 children aged between 3-8 years of age racing along Hove seafront and the atmosphere was fantastic, some really competitive spirits out there on the course. They really put their heart and soul into it and hopefully some of these children will go on to do our children’s triathlon now they have had a taste of multi-sportwith the scootathlon.”
Scootathlon has become a recognised event accompanying Triathlons all over the country.
