Brighton Dome Unveils Public Artwork for Pride 2019
A new public artwork celebrating the LGBTQ+ community is being unveiled to celebrate Brighton & Hove Pride 2019. The eye-catching illustration has been commissioned by Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival, following an open call to local artists to create a temporary mural on the building’s New Road hoardings.
The large-scale drawing by Kemptown residentElla Morris,represents a diverse range of genders, identities, ethnicities and body shapes. Characters are seen physically embracing or holding placards, enveloped in the embrace of a pink central figure, symbolic of the city’s community spirit. The artist’s vision was to create something fun but with a sense of purpose, immediately communicating the celebratory atmosphere of Pride with bright block colours and naïve lines that depicts a community who want their message of equal rights to be seen and heard. Some of the city’s iconic landmarks, including the west pier, i360 and Brighton Dome appear in the background.
Commenting on the commission, Ella Morris said:
“I’m really excited that Brighton Dome have given me the freedom to create this artwork. It’s a privilege to have my illustration on display in the city centre and for so many visitors to be able to see it during Pride 2019 is incredible for me as an LGBTQ+ artist.”
Since moving to Brighton to attend university 10 years ago, Ella rekindled her love of art by attending life drawing classes which has developed into freelance commissions on top of her full-time career in marketing. Fascinated by art in digital form, Ella often creates joyful characters using bright colours, ensuring her art is whimsical and accessible. Throughout the creative process, she gathers inspiration from the city, often carrying a sketchbook or iPad to draw local people of interest.
Brighton Dome Concert Hall will be joining in with Pride celebrations by opening its doors on Sat 3 August (10.30am – 4pm) to visitors enjoying the parade and festivities in local streets nearby. Brighton & Hove Pride 2019 Open Daywill include free, family-friendly activities including glam and glitzy puppet-making, super sparkly face-painting and big and bold badge-making.
The Foyer café-bar will be open for refreshments throughout the day, with a quiet room facility for carers with babies, small children and disabled visitors.
