Brunswick Fine Wines and Spirits A Review For Absolute

Brunswick Fine Wines and Spirits A Review For Absolute

A unique shopping experience for premium wines, spirits and wine accessories. Tutored tastings and events in the heart of Brighton.

When it comes to wine, I have always found that selecting the right bottle can feel intimidating—especially when faced with an overwhelming selection. How are all these wines different? How much do I need to spend to get a quality wine? That was until I paid a visit to the people at Brunswick Fine Wines, where the lovely team of experts made me realise that buying wines does not need to be stressful at all.

Wine lovers Carlos De Haan and Jamie Graham established Brunswick Fine Wines and Spirits right here in Brighton way back in 2016, setting themselves apart geographically from the many fine wine merchants you can find in London, with decades of experience behind them advising suppliers and collectors all over the world. Their first store, ideally situated opposite the Brighton Dome on the prestigious New Road in the heart of Brighton, opened last February in a stunning restored and converted Georgian building. The shop itself looks beautiful, its Georgian facade remains as it was, and the interior is completely fitted out with bespoke handmade solid oak furniture and shelves proudly showcasing a wonderful selection of fine wines and spirits that customers can experience in a unique setting.

On my visit I met with Carlos and Tina who showed me round the shop whilst giving me a rundown of what they do. The first thing I noticed was what an extremely knowledgeable young team of experts were on site, which is great for people who want to learn more and explore the world of fine wines. My perception of fine wines having an element of snobbery involved was pushed further out of my mind the more time I spent in the store. Carlos tells me that their aim is to break down barriers and create new wine lovers, with price levels accessible to more people. There are no mass produced wines here, and there is an interesting story behind each and every wine they stock. They source the finest wines and spirits through their unique network, sometimes offering wines direct from growers that you won’t find anywhere else! The staff are always learning more themselves, Tina herself was looking forward to an educational trip to Bordeaux the following day and looks forward to being able to share her newfound knowledge with the rest of the team and their customers.

The shop itself has a main store at the front with a huge variety of wines and spirits to suit any tastes. There are several more rooms further back. The next one being a function room displaying a fine selection of mid-range bordeaux. I learned that Bordeaux takes roughly ten years to mature! Carlos tells me that all the wines I can see are fully matured and ready for drinking so there is no need to wait to enjoy a bottle once you have made your purchase. The function room is where they host regular ‘meet the winemaker’ sessions and wine-tasting events which sound great like a great fun way to learn about wine.

Further back mid-shop is a room full of specialist locally sourced sparkling wines, and right at the back the temperature gets a little cooler as there is a room containing the “really special stuff.” With a selection of wines priced between £150 – £5000 a bottle! Knowing this, I cannot help but feel slightly nervous whenever Carlos picks a bottle up to show me! All the wines are in perfect condition and are kept that way as the whole building is temperature controlled, which is important for storage purposes.

Although I thoroughly recommend a visit to the store, you do not have to be local to benefit from Brunswick Fine Wines knowledge, expertise, and their extensive network of some of the most prestigious New and Old World wine houses. They have a very sophisticated website where you can see live stock availability and order direct, and a dedicated in-house logistics team which arranges shipping locally, nationally and internationally, using sustainable packaging wherever possible. Did you know that the last mile of a delivery is the worst in terms of environmental impacts? The good news is that for local deliveries they use Zedify, a zero emissions delivery service, which is free for orders of £100 or more!

I feel much more relaxed about choosing wine to buy now that I know I can rely on the team at Brunswick Fine wines to steer me in the right direction. They are absolutely passionate about wine and I know that with their extensive experience and comprehensive selection of fine wines and rare spirits I am in safe hands. They really do pride themselves in finding the perfect bottle for any occasion and I thoroughly recommend paying their beautiful shop a visit and getting immersed in the world of fine wines.
