Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On at Brighton Dome

Marvin Gaye’s seminal album, What’s Going On, was released 50 years ago this year and to celebrate the anniversary, Nu Civilisation Orchestra (NCO) will perform its own homage at Brighton Dome on Saturday 30 October.

A creative exploration of Gaye’s masterpiece, What’s Going On will be conducted by Musical Director Peter Edwards together with talented young musicians and guest artists, the acclaimed British soul singer Noel McKoy on lead vocals and Brighton-based spoken word artist and activist AFLO. the poet.

NCO will reflect on current times through the lens of Gaye’s incredible catalogue and the themes that continue to resonate today, from racial discrimination and police violence to environmental issues and the impact of war. Visual projections by Yeast Culture, combined with the 23-piece orchestra’s formidable horns, strings and backing vocalists will bring the heart and soul of Gaye’s music to life.

Singer Noel McKoy commented: “Since the time of the album’s release to the present day, every time I’ve heard or sung it I think to myself that mothers are actually still crying – ever more so, and young brothers are still dying.  The tracks from this album were, and still are the benchmark of soulful commentary from a black man’s experience which can be related to across the globe. For me, this is going to be one of my performances of a lifetime. I am immensely looking forward to working with NCO who I am collaborating with for the first time. My admiration for Marvin’s music has always been so high, I am thrilled to be a part of this project.”

AFLO. the poet added: “Artists like Marvin Gaye have paved the way for artists like me, to speak our minds on the unfortunate truths of our society. As an artist and activist who embraces creativity to encourage social change, it will truly be an honour and a privilege to write and perform to Marvin’s music alongside the NCO in Brighton.”

Nu Civilisation Orchestra is a world-class ensemble brought together by Gary Crosby OBE, Artistic Director of the music development organisation and charity Tomorrow’s Warriors. The organisation celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with a vision to continue providing a free platform that brings through the next generation of UK jazz talent from diverse backgrounds, sustaining the scene from grassroots up and supporting pathways into professional careers.

Gary Crosby said: “The What’s Going On tour will be a wonderful way to celebrate our 30th anniversary through one of the greatest albums of all time, while also highlighting the fact that the struggle continues. Marvin very much had anti-war sentiment in his heart, plus inner-city blues, social deprivation and inequality in the community. It’s as relevant today as ever, and it’s important to ponder on, as so many of the challenges still apply now. It’s going to be a powerful evening of music and we can’t wait to perform at Brighton Dome with the NCO.”
