During Global Week of Service, Hilton team members across the globe host events to address key challenges faced by their local community, from employability and community investment, to conservation and sustainability. Global Week of Service is part of Hilton’s Travel with Purpose corporate responsibility commitment, which focuses on ensuring the company has a positive environmental and social impact on every community in which it operates. As part of Travel with Purpose, Hilton recently announced a robust new commitment to cut its environmental footprint in half and double its social impact investment by 2030.
The day will kick off with a series of inspirational talks aimed at local students, introduced by Adrian Skerrett, a British conservationist who resides in the Seychelles. Talks will focus on women in leadership, inspiring future generations, and sustainability, with a particular emphasis on Hilton’s efforts to preserve the Seychellois coral reef. Attendees will include VIP delegates, Jan van der Putten, Vice President of Operations, Africa & Indian Ocean, Hilton and local students.
The second part of the day will focus on Hilton’s efforts to preserve the local environment, in particular the coral reef. Guests will visit the coral reef nursery at Hilton Northolme Resort & Spa, which was implemented to help the coral reef recover from major eco-disasters, including the 2004 tsunami, the global bleaching event in 2016 and ongoing challenges of climate change. The degradation of the coral has knock-on consequences on local communities who rely on the area for fishing and food, making it crucial to build its resilience against future incidents.
Guests will have the chance to see the coral nursery for themselves and explore the reef and the 650-metre snorkeling trail with Chloé Pozas, a marine biologist and member of Hilton’s Marine Conservation Society Seychelles team.
The day will be a celebration of Hilton’s ongoing efforts to have a positive social and environmental impact on Mahé and Silhouette Island and will highlight the properties’ current projects. Along with the coral nurseries, other initiatives include the desalination and bottling of water at Hilton Labriz Resort & Spa; the introduction of a kitchen garden to reduce energy and water consumption on Silhouette Island; and the introduction of a hydroponic farm.
