International ballet superstar Carlos Acosta brings his critically acclaimed Cuban dance company to Brighton Dome

Following the success ofAcosta Danza’s Brighton debut in 2017, the critically acclaimed Cuban company return to Brighton Dome on17&18 Mar 2020withEvolutionas part of a UK-wide spring tour. With a programme of four new and existing dance works, the company will be joined on stage by world renownedCarlos Acostain the spirited finale piece Rooster, set to a soundtrack by The Rolling Stones.


Carlos Acosta launchedAcosta Danzain Havana, Cuba after retiring from The Royal Ballet in 2015. Under his artistic directorship, the company is made up of some of Cuba’s finest ballet and contemporary dancers and pays tribute to the vibrancy of Cuban culture.

In January 2020, Acosta began a new role as Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet. In 2018, the BAFTA-winning writer ofI, Daniel Blake, Paul Laverty wrote Yuli, a film based on Acosta’s life which went on to receive international acclaim.

Acosta Danza:Evolutionis made up of four contrasting works crafted by a diverse range of international choreographers.

Paysage, Soudain, la nuit, a new work for the company by visionary Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidberg, approaches Cuban culture through rumba, a genre of traditional Cuban music with African roots. A visual installation,Vientos(2017) by Cuban artist Elizabet Cerviño sets the backdrop to the piece.

Flemish-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presentsFaun, a duet set to Debussy’s original score with additional compositions by British Indian musician Nitin Sawhney CBE. One of the most sought-after contemporary choreographers in the world,heis known for fusing different cultures and styles in his work.

Spanish choreographer Maria Rovira, created the mesmeric solo dance,Improntaspecifically for company dancer Zeleidy Crespo whose training is rooted in the folkloric dance styles of Cuba.

Leading British choreographer Christopher Bruce CBE presentsRooster, a joyous finale with Acosta performing with his company to a rock n roll soundtrack.

Acosta Danza’sEvolutionUK Tour Spring 2020is co-produced by Sadler’s Wells and Valid Productions and presented by Dance Consortium.
