MARKET Restaurant and Bar is the latest creation from the experienced restaurateur and designer/chef duo Kate Alleston and Neil Mannifield that brought you Graze, the popular 2AA rosette restaurant located in the fashionable Brunswick area of the city. Named and inspired by them stumbling upon the old Camden Market sign at a recent antiques fair, which will adorn the front of the building, MARKET will be the first restaurant in the city where bar stool dining and cooking is the main activity.
Diners at the 50 cover restaurant can choose to eat at the bar and watch the chefs work their magic, take an intimate table or book Downmarket, for upmarket private dining.
The fresh new look of the building has been designed to give the feel of a traditional market with a swathe of Victorian Green metro tiling, mirrors, a lawn wall and a bright, clean, utilitarian approach to the furniture, lighting and wall usage.
The bill of fare is to be mixture of supplier driven and inspired small plates ideal for sharing, aptly named on the menu ‘From the Green Grocer’, ‘From the Fish Monger’, ‘From the Butcher’ and so on, and including delights such as Scallops with wild boar bacon and honeyed parsnip puree, Polenta, mushroom, and cream cheese balls with smoked paprika popcorn and the mysterious ‘Crashed Eggs!’.
Alongside these offerings, will be a selection from the Market Classics which is a series of more familiar larger dishes from steaks to ‘Market Price’ fish of the day and on Saturdays and Sundays their Big Market Brunch menu will be served from 10am.
The exciting wine list and cocktail menu have been carefully chosen to match the food offering and locally brewed craft lager and beers will be available on tap and by the bottle.
Kate and Neil are working very closely with a handful of Sussex’ best local suppliers some of whose wares will even be purchasable in the restaurant. For Market is not just a restaurant but a market place, a hub, an outlet, a haunt for people who relish comfort food and freshness.
