Jazz On The Prom Saturday 15th& Sunday 16thJune 2019 Brighton

Brighton Beach Club and British Airways i360 are putting on a two day jazz event on Brighton beach to raise money for Starr Trust.

The jazz festival will take place on the outside event space between the two businesses framed by the newly erected Upside Down House where people can take photos of themselves upside down.

Jazz On The Prom is a public, free event celebrating local performers from college age students to 75 years of age. This is an inclusive event that gives local people the opportunity to perform live to a public audience on Brighton beach. The jazz event has only been made possible thanks to all the performers who will be giving up their time for free to take to the stage for the public to enjoy.

The two day festival will be raising money for Starr Trust. The local charity is an independent and family run organisation. Their income comes entirely from community fundraising and events. They support young people aged 10 –18 to fulfil their potential through sports, arts and education, by giving a helping hand to achieve their goals at a time when they really need it.

Streamline Taxis have provided the sound system, power from the Upside Down House, Brighton & Hove City Council for the crowd safety fencing, The Metropole (Hilton) the staging and deck chairs. A donation of £1 is requested per deck chair which will go to Starr Trust. There will be glitter painting, again money raised will contribute to Starr Trusts ongoing mission.

In addition to entertainment there will be two bars for refreshments; a Sodexo Prosecco bar and a sustainability bar provided by Brighton Beach Club sponsored by Havana. A contribution of both bar sales will go to the Starr Trust.

The weekend will kick off on Saturday 15thJune with a surprise performance from Brighton & Hove Operatic Society, the oldest amateur dramatic company in the South of England established in 1886. The afternoon will see a variety of jazz acts including a 20 piece big band from The Sussex Jazz Orchestra directed by trombonist Mark Bassey.   Other bands include Melissa & Reece, Zoe Larks, Amber Burgoyne along with Rogers & Redmond.  The day will finish with Brighton Lindy Hoppers. Enjoy a free dance with this local swing dance company that have been teaching lindy hoo, Charleston, Balboa and Jive in Brighton for the past 9 years. Stay on and practice your new moves to a 9 piece band; The Chris Coull Big Band. The band will play a wide variety of big band classics such as “The Lady Is A Tramp” “Let There Be Love” “In The Mood” to name just a few.

Come back on Sunday 16thJune for another full day of Jazz On The Prom. Enjoy bands with Phily Kennington, Ellie Levy Pepper, Rock Choir, Jax Perry, Dave Williams before finishing off the weekend with Swing Time Cinema, a three piece jazz band.
