Kempinski Seychelles Resort’s Green Committee Champions’ Sustainabilityin the wake ofEarthCheck Silver Benchmark Status
Kempinski Seychelles Resort Baie Lazare continues to reach important milestones in its journey towards improved sustainable business practices. Last week, the luxury hotel achieved Silver Benchmark status through EarthCheck, the world’s leading environmental management and professional services group for the travel and tourism industry. The hotel performed especially well in its most recentEarthCheck assessment, particularly in independent evaluations of the hotel’s greenhouse gas emissions and total energyand water consumption.
Stewart Moore, CEO of EarthCheck, said that Kempinski Seychelles Resort Baie Lazare has taken a significant leadership position in sustainability. “I would like to congratulate the whole team on their achievement,” said Mr Moore. “Kempinski Seychelles Resort Baie Lazare is a valued member of a global group of industry innovators who dare to make a difference.”The luxury hotel’s specially appointed Green Committee celebrated this admirable achievement by organising events which highlighted and promoted sustainable business practices to their peers and hotel guests: A beach clean-up was arranged in Baie Lazare, in which a team of over 30 hotel staff enthusiastically armed with rakes, gloves and disposal bags volunteered to clean a popular neighbourhood beach. The team collected over 250kgof discarded refuse in less than an hour.
Last Saturday, the hoteljoined a global community of eco-conscious individuals and businesses in observing the 2019 instalment of EarthHour. Lights in the luxury hotel’s central building and outlying accommodations were switched off and switched out for candlelight, as guests’ attention was drawn to the main beach where a commemorative pyre was lit up, encouraging guests to “spark” a conversation about climate change.Kempinski Seychelles Resort’s general manager, Masami Egami, said, “Tourism is a USD 1.4 trillion industry which directly affects the destinations in which it operates.
The very environmental values and cultural assets that attract visitors to destinations like Seychelles need to be protected and responsibly managed. We believe that hoteliers and tourism operators have a profound responsibility to manage the environmental and socio-economic impacts their operations leave on a destination. We recognise that these values are important to our guests as welland we thank them for participating in our initiatives.” By working with EarthCheck, Kempinski Seychelles Resort Baie Lazare has joined other industry leaders who are taking meaningful steps towards resolving some of the very real issues that face the planet.
