Lockdown artwork by Brighton Dome employee goes on display in venue

Over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, Brighton Dome employee Graham Cameron produced a series of striking illustrations detailing his experience of lockdown, the impact of Covid-19 on the arts and his time furloughed from work.

Cameron’s artwork, which includes illustrations of much-loved Brighton landmarks such as the Palace Pier, Royal Pavilion and a stunning drawing of Brighton Dome, will go on display in the venue’s Founders Room from 26 to 31 October. Alongside familiar scenes of the city and popular arts and entertainment venues, Cameron uses colourful motifs such as skulls, doll-like characters and animals to describe his feelings about lockdown, isolation and the escape provided by the natural world.

Cameron says: “I’ve worked at Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival for 21 years, and during furlough I re-connected to the other version of me – the artist. I found myself drawing everyday as a way to express how the pandemic was personally affecting me but also how I saw the outside world unfolding from the safety of my lockdown caravan.”

As part of the exhibition, Cameron’s original artwork and digital prints will be for sale via an online auction, with a 10% donation from each purchase made to Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival’s charity.

Andrew Comben, Chief Executive, Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival added:

“We are proud to host Graham’s incredible body of artwork, telling such an intimate and sensitive portrayal of his lockdown experience that many of us will all relate to. Thanks also to Graham for generously donating his Brighton Dome print which raised valuable funds during the venue’s closure last year and for his continued support through the sale of this work.”

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to buy a copy of Cameron’s book, The Art of G: Illustrating My Way Through a Pandemic, which features a diary entry alongside each piece of artwork.
