45 Giant Snowdogs Will Descend To Brighton This Autumn
Phoenix Brighton is chuffed that one of their most established artists, Mike Edwards, has been chosen to design two Snowdog sculptures as part of the extraordinary public art trail being staged in Brighton & Hove this autumn. Snowdogs by the Sea, a collaboration between Wild in Art and the Martlets Hospice, sees 40 large scale sculptures, inspired by the beloved characters by Raymond Briggs, appear in various locations around the city.
Mike has currently set up a temporary work station in Phoenix Brighton’s south foyer, where he is busy applying paint to his first Snowdog. This dog, displaying a theme of hope and reflection inspired by the work of the Martlets Hospice, is being sponsored by Brighton & Hove High School.
The second Snowdog is still under wraps (literally!), but we can reveal it is a special David Bowie tribute dog, which will be displayed at Brighton Marina.
Mike is grateful for ArtRepublic, through whom he got the commission, and also to Phoenix Brighton for allowing him to use the space to paint for free.
Mike Edwards is an established artist based in Brighton UK. Well known for his portraits made of text – Mike recently completed a major portrait of Lord Attenborough made from the names of Hollywood stars – now on permanent display at the new Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts in Brighton. Mike’s work is in collections all over the world – including the collections of Roger Taylor, Zoe Ball and the late publisher Felix Dennis. David Bowie signed Mike’s unique typographic portrait of Aladdin Sane – which went on to raise phenomenal funds for charity at auction. An exceptional painter – Mike started out as a professional artisan artist before developing his own body of work. Amongst many other things, he’s created a stage set for rock band Blur and produced commissioned artworks for Bacardi, Budweiser and Urban Outfitters. Mike continues to push boundaries in new paintings currently in progress in his studio in central Brighton.
