Petworth House and Park opens its doors for a Tree-mendous Christmas
Petworth’s Tree-mendous Christmas: Saturday 26 November 2022 – Monday 2 January 2023, 10:30am-4:30pm. Closed 24 and 25 December. Petworth House is open 10:30am-4:30pm, last entry 4pm. The garden and main car park are open 10am-5pm.
This festive season, the National Trust’s Petworth House and Park in West Sussex is inviting you to a Tree-mendous Christmas. Magnificently decorated trees fill the mansion; you can enjoy choirs singing in the courtyard too, a Christmas Makers Market, and late-evening openings.
Highlights include the Marble Hall, transformed into an enchanted winter forest scene with sparkling lights and woodland creatures – look out for deer crafted from winter greenery, and tiny mice. Wood carved trees decorate Petworth’s famous Grinling Gibbons’ Carved Room, against a beautiful backdrop of winter greenery and candles. Paper flowers adorn the tree in the Little Dining Room, drawing on the florals in the collection, from the William Morris curtains to patterns on the ceramics.
The community spirit of Christmas is on full show in the Red Room where a showstopping tree features decorations created by partners, schools and businesses from the local Petworth town community. We’re inviting you to be part of the festive displays too – by writing your own Christmas wish and hanging it on a tree in the Chapel, where candle-like lights flicker by the stained-glass window.
You can also experience the magical festivities at Petworth House during special late night openings, when the lights sparkle extra bright after dark and choirs sing in the courtyard (3 and 21 December).
On Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 December hunt for Christmas presents or a treat for yourself, at the Christmas Makers Market. Stalls are packed with high quality artisan gifts including jewellery, homewares, textiles and art. This event is being held in partnership with Petworth Pop Up: Makers Market, and is on the evening of special late shopping in Petworth town.
Sarah Taylor, Senior Programming Officer for Petworth House says: “We’re excited to be able to offer visitors the Tree-mendous Christmas experience at Petworth this year. There will be new festive displays in each room, and the enchanted winter forest in the Marble Hall is something visitors wouldn’t have seen before at Petworth House. We’re also encouraging everyone to pop into the Servants’ Quarters where they’ll find a gorgeous gingerbread village. On late night openings, the Christmas Makers Market, decorative lights and singing choirs will make the evenings feel extra festive too.”
Petworth’s Tree-mendous Christmas is open from Saturday 26 November 2022 to Monday 2 January 2023, 10:30am-4:30pm. Closed 24 and 25 December. Petworth House is open 10:30am-4:30pm, last entry 4pm. The garden and main car park are open from 10am-5pm. No advanced booking needed, but visitors are required to purchase a ticket to the site to enter, free for National Trust members. Petworth Lates: Tree-mendous Christmas
Experience the magical festivities at Petworth House when the lights sparkle after dark, and listen to a choir singing in the courtyard on both dates. Normal admission applies, National Trust members free. Visitors can arrive via Church Lodge reception (by St Mary’s Church in Petworth town) or the main visitor car park.
