The Ethicurean Guild – Weekday Street Food Takeaway review.
The Ethicurean Guild produces amazing food using the best produce whilst helping to train and feed Brighton and Hove’s most vulnerable residents.
I first came across the Ethicurean Guild some months back when my wife and I decided to go out for Sunday Roast at one of our local pubs The Stoneham, where founder and head chef Edd Heller and his talented team had set up in the kitchen. We have not been anywhere else since to get our roast fix. Not just because of lockdown, thankfully we have been able to arrange collection or delivery throughout these strange times from their kitchens at The Foundy, The Southern Belle and the Stoneham, and they have always been nothing short of perfection! Incredibly generous portions of what I can only describe as the very best quality roast dinners in all of Brighton and Hove. Perfectly cooked and seasoned meat with bonus delicious croquettes. The finest quality seasonal veg, Crispy fluffy Potatoes and giant Yorkshire puddings to mop up the tastiest gravy ever! It seems word has got around as they now account for 25% of all roasts sold via UberEats!
I began following the Ethicurean Guild on social media, and It turns out creating fantastic Sunday Roasts are but a fraction of what they have been up to over the last few months. This big-hearted organisation has been very busy supporting the community around Brighton and Hove by feeding the city’s most vulnerable residents through providing meals to food banks and donations from your kind selves. They have also sent over six thousand meals so far to the doctors, nurses and paramedics working on the Covid front line. All this while helping give ex rough sleepers a leg-up by training them in their Asian inspired street food kitchen at the Foundry Pub. These incredible acts of kindness and generosity spurred me to give them a call to give their takeaway food a try, and I have to say it really was nothing short of remarkable!
Ordering is easy through UberEats and the food arrived promptly and piping hot in ethically sourced fully recyclable packaging. Chopsticks at the ready, we wasted no time in diving into our selection of snacks and rice-bowls.
First, the snacks, and from the first bite of their infamous Korean Fried Cauliflower we were hooked. Completely blown away by punchy sticky sauce that smothered perfectly cooked delicate morsels of fried cauliflower. These beauties are an absolute must have when ordering from the Ethicurean and I regret not ordering more! Equally as impressive were the Chicken Karaage bites. Seriously intensely flavoured sticky sauce poured over tender chunks of succulent breast meat that were fun to eat and delicious. The Gyozas were a pleasant surprise as the ground pork filling was creatively spiced so they had a lovely flavour unlike any dumplings I have tasted, no need to dip them in soy sauce as I would normally as they tasted great on their own. We also managed to cram in some “Big Uncle Mao” light and fluffy steamed bao buns which came jam packed with juicy pulled pork. They really hit the spot. Hands down the best Bao’s in town.
On to the rather tremendous rice-bowls. We plumped for chicken katsu curry and a teriyaki pork belly. Both were delightful. I love the sweet fruity flavour of katsu and the lovely free-range chicken breast comes smothered in the stuff. The delicately seasoned steamed rice soaks it all up and I enjoyed every mouthful. The Teriyaki pork was an altogether different beast with a sauce that really packed a punch. Slow cooking was certainly evident as the pork melted away releasing the meats full flavour which went perfectly with the rich, intensely flavoured, and colourful sauce that hit all the right notes. Candied walnuts littered the steamed rice which added extra dimensions in flavour and texture.
The Ethicurean Guild have got you well and truly covered when it comes to takeaway night! Literally everything we had made us wish we had bottomless bellies, so we will be returning for more. Each dish we tried from the incredibly well thought out menu had very distinct flavours and the love and passion that goes into the creating the food is evident throughout. Every time you order from the Ethicurean Guild you are helping them continue with all the brilliant things they are doing for the community. Edd has partnered with several of some of Brighton’s best loved venues so if Asian cuisine is not your thing then give one of their other kitchens a try. Perhaps the Dirty bird for delicious chicken burgers, wings and sides. Or the Dirty Vegan to satisfy your plant based naughty cravings. All available throughout the week on Ubereats, and don’t forget their legendary Sunday lunches that are taking Brighton and Hove by storm.
