Tide, by Lost in the Lanes “A much needed modern spin on seafood takeaway”.
Once in a while something really special and unique springs up that invigorates my love of the wonderful diverse and ever thriving foodie scene that we are so incredibly lucky to have in our wonderful city. Last week the team behind popular city centre Café Lost in the Lanes launched their exciting new seafood kitchen “Tide.” Where the freshest locally sourced seafood meets Louisiana’s lively Cajun street food scene to create an inimitable modern twist on the seafood takeaway. This got my attention straight away. Head Chef James Flavell has put in months of grafting to perfect “Under Lock and Key” Tide’s signature southern fried coating, as well as vibrant side dishes and versatile salads and sauces. I wasted no time in ordering a lockdown takeaway, and I have to say James’s hard work has truly paid off, as our experience was nothing short of spectacular. Here’s how it went.
Ordering a Tide Kitchen takeaway is as easy as a few clicks on Uber Eats to arrange a fast and hassle-free delivery. II opted to order direct via www.tidebrighton.com and collected my box from Lost In The Lanes Cafe. James’s abundant passion and creativity manifests itself on the Tide menu. Which centres on an exciting range of Southern fried fish and seafood options, burgers and a comprehensive choice of incredibly tasty sounding sides and salads. Tide also caters for vegans and vegetarians and the menu is mainly gluten free! A range of seafood box set meals have been devised to share and savour with family and friends.
James hands our bounty over personally in some lovely looking branded environmentally friendly recyclable boxes, which did little to mask the tantalising aromas emanating from inside for the entire tortuous car journey home.
Thankfully my wife had already warmed our plates, so we wasted no time digging in upon my return, finger-bowl at the ready we decide to get the messy bit out the way first by tucking into shell on king prawns in chilli, lime and rum caramel. Opening the box to gaze upon some of the biggest juiciest freshest looking prawns I have ever seen, and oh the flavour! The meat was rich, pungent, and moreish, while the chilli, lime, and rum caramel dressing suitably zesty, sweet, and spicy all at once, pulling my tastebuds in all sorts of weird and wonderful directions. generously seasoned, bursting with flavour and the epitome of thoughtful, accomplished cooking.
It was time to finally get a taste of “Under lock and Key” which encased perfectly cooked springy but not chewy, tender, and succulent squid and flaky yet moist and plump Gurnard fillets. The southern fried coating was just incredible. So good it was hard to imagine being able to perfect in a mere four months. Not greasy in the slightest and tasted far superior to anything the colonel has ever produced. Intensely flavoursome and yet the wonderful fresh taste of the fish it encrusted was still able to shine.
Our sides were just as impressive. We plumped for Cajun potatoes with corn salsa and Cajun aioli, and some miso and garlic butter corn on the cob. The ever so crispy potatoes were penetratingly seasoned with powerful flavours that stay with you. I could not get enough of them. The corn, exceptionally sweet and juicy, transported by Miso Garlic Butter Sauce, imparting an extra dimension of mouthwatering ‘umami’ roundness to a simple yet essential side dish that’s always great fun to eat.
Tide Brighton’s takeaway experience is nothing short of exceptional. If you are planning on ordering a quality takeaway over the weekend and fancy something a bit different, Tide is the place to visit.
