Waterlily Festival brings an explosion of colour to Sheffield Park this summer as the lakes come into bloom
Saturday 12 June – Sunday 18 July
Sheffield Park’s picturesque lakes burst into life in June and July. To make the most of this natural spectacle, the National Trust’s Waterlily Festival will return this summer.
Visitors are invited to wander the shores of the lakes, adorned by thousands of waterlily plants. There are seven different species, in different shades and colours, from buttery yellow to deep crimson red. The National Trust property in East Sussex is encouraging you to get up close to the bright blooms and buzzing dragonflies with their floating pontoon, installed specially for this natural event.
A giant fountain offers a new addition to this year’s celebration. The elegant new installation promises to bring some dazzle to the lakes through the five-week long festival. Look out for giant lily pads and flowers created by award-winning community art charity Same Sky; and fun family activities to keep the kids entertained during the long, sunny summer days.
Waterlilies were first introduced to Sheffield Park over a hundred years ago [1] and the National Trust team are delighted that the estate’s gates are once again open for all to enjoy the historic plants after a turbulent 2020 when many were unable to visit.
Head Gardener Flic Archer said: ‘Spending time in nature got many of us through lockdown and, despite a difficult year, gave us a sanctuary and a place to meet friends and family safely. The lakes really are spectacular during the summer – it’s a tough decision but it has to be my favourite time of year at Sheffield Park! I’m delighted that this year we will be able to share the view.’
Don’t forget to stop by the shop for a selection of gifts and exclusive waterlily designs. Or when hunger calls head to the Coach House Café for lunch.
