What does the future of gaming look like?
Gaming has increased in popularity over recent years with immersive experiences, advanced technologies and interactivity now a huge part of the overall games’ environment. Online gaming also continues to attract a wealth of players with games such as Deal or No Deal Bingo easily accessible to audiences.
According to recent statistics, the number of video game users in the UK is predicted to reach over 57 million by 2027. But what exactly does the future hold for online and video gaming?
Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) integration
Currently, VR offers a rather solitary experience when it comes to gaming and, previously, that has been a big part of the appeal. But many people are reluctant to wear a heavy headset and venture into a different reality when mixing socially. However, advancing technologies could soon allow real-time interactions with others in their chosen VR world.
AR has always been about blending digital images with reality which has naturally led to a more social experience. An integration between the two would certainly make for an interesting and diverse gaming experience.
Cloud gaming and the demise of traditional consoles
Just like television subscription services, cloud gaming uses remote servers and offers a way of gaming that doesn’t require downloads. This also allows games to be played on any device including a phone or tablet. However, currently, costs can be fairly high due to subscription fees plus an additional charge for the games themselves.
The increase in cloud networks and higher bandwidths is likely to create more possibilities in this type of gaming and, in time, reduce the costs associated. Google and Xbox have already launched their version of cloud gaming so it’s only a matter of time before others jump on the band wagon.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) in gaming
Although there is much in the news around concerns relating to AI and the ways in which it can be regulated, gaming is one area that could benefit from artificial intelligence innovations. As well as the potential to create new content based on a player’s individual interests, AI can also adapt games to the player’s ability. This makes for a completely unique gaming experience, with endless possibilities and immersion opportunities.
However, depending how far the inclusion of AI within gaming goes, there is the possibility that characters could end up having more autonomy than the players themselves. Whether this will remove some of the excitement of the experience remains to be seen.
Whatever technology becomes the dominant player in the world of video gaming, it’s certain that the popular pastime will become even more interactive, social and personalised.
