Hello film fans. Obviously with films like ET and Alfa Papa being shown at Brighton’s Big screen I understand how difficult it is to drag yourself to a cinema. But if the lure of Meat Liquor food and Jose Cuervo Tequila cocktails is not enough I suggest the three new releases that follow.
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Hiccup the Viking and Toothless the dragon take on a sinister new foe in this fun-packed sequel! A lot has happened since we last saw Viking teenager Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his lovable companion Toothless the dragon. Today, dragons and Vikings happily co-exist on the island of Berk. Astrid (America Ferrera), Snotlout (Jonah Hill) and friends spend their days challenging one another to dragon races.
That’s great fun for everybody – unless you happen to be a sheep! Meanwhile, Hiccup and Toothless soar through the skies exploring uncharted worlds. Their adventures take them to an ice cave filled with hundreds of wild dragons. But they also encounter mysterious, evil Drago Bludvist (Djimon Hounsou)!
Now our unlikely heroes must fight to keep the peace. All our favourite characters are back for this amazing sequel to the Oscar-nominated animation. They’re joined by fabulous new ones voiced by Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett, Djimon Hounsou and Game of Thrones star Kit Harington.
4/5 from me and well worth a trip to the multiplex.
Transformers – Age of Extinction
The Dinobots make their spectacular entrance as mankind faces total annihilation in the fourth explosive ‘Transformers’ movie. Years have passed since the devastating battle of Chicago and humans have turned against the Transformers.
Then widowed inventor Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) uncovers a beat-up old truck that turns out to be none other than Optimus Prime. Arrogant government agent Harold Attinger (Kelsey Grammer) promptly arrives with a large military force demanding to know the whereabouts of the reactivated Autobot. Meanwhile, scientist Joshua (Stanley Tucci) isolates the unstable metal from which the Transformers are made.
Little does humanity anticipate that this will attract a terrifying new menace! Michael Bay’s fourth jaw-dropping Transformers movie not only amps up the explosive action but also gives Optimus Prime a stunning, sword-wielding makeover. The big news for Transformers fans, however, is the introduction of the astonishing Dinobots. They’re led by Grimlock, who transforms into an extraordinary mechanical Tyrannosaurus rex!
4/5 from me if not for the effects alone!
Tammy
A downhearted woman embarks on a road trip with her granny in this crazy comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Susan Sarandon. Life is not being kind to Tammy (Melissa McCarthy). The unlucky thirtysomething has written off her rustbucket of a car.
She’s been fired from her dead end job at a greasy burger bar by sleazy boss Keith (Ben Falcone). And she’s got home to find hubby Greg (Nat Foxon) carrying on with their neighbour, Missi (Toni Collette). Tammy’s only way of getting away is to team up with her hard-drinking, potty-mouthed grandmother Pearl (Susan Sarandon), who has cash, a car and a yearning to see Niagara Falls.
So the unlikely duo burn rubber on a wild adventure. Husband and wife team Ben Falcone and ‘Bridesmaids’ breakout star Melissa McCarthy co-wrote this hilariously madcap comedy. Its amazing supporting cast includes Allison Janney as Tammy’s long-suffering mum and Kathy Bates as Pearl’s cousin Lenore.
4/5 again and really classic stuff. Genuinely funny and heartwarming.
